My second round of Accutane Journal

Hey, I’ve been looking through this here and there and have found some valuable information. Since so many people are curious about Accutance and aren’t sure of whether they should try it, I thought I would try to remember to share my progress with you all.
I first went onto Accutance when I was 19 in April 2001. I started at 60mg/day for 2 months and then went to 80mg for one month. I was supposed to take it for 5 months but quit after 3 months. My skin cleared wonderfully and I didn’t want to deal with chapped lips anymore. Only side effects I had were chapped lips, dry skin, minor initial break out first month.
My skin stayed clear for 3 years and started to break out again August 2004. I tried Retin A and Doxycycline for one year, they worked but if I missed the antibiotic for more than a couple of days, I would break out. I don’t want to take antibiotics for the next few years so I decided to go back on Accutane.
This is my fourth day–I’m taking only 30 mg/day. Since my skin is pretty clear, we started a low dose so I hopefully don’t go through a bad breakout or side effects right away. My skin is spotless (knock on wood) right now.
We are moving up to 50 mg in 2 weeks and then slowly moving up after that. I’ll keep in touch.
FYI…. things that work great on Accutane:
1. Cetaphil cleanser
2. Cetaphil moisturizer (before bed and before makeup in the am)
3. Vitamin E 1000 I.U. (once per day)
4. Aquaphor at night
5. Head and Shoulders twice per week

  1. I started my second week. I am on 30mg per day and am suppose to up to 50mg today. I’m going to wait a few days because I’m going out of town and don’t want to risk having a break out.
My skin is a little dry and pealing around my chin, otherwise, I’ve only had one pimple come out on the side of my chin in 2 weeks. So, I’m doing pretty good as far as side effects starting out on a low dose. I’ll let you all know how things are going again after a week on the 50 mg.

  2. Aquaphor is an ointment you can buy over the counter at any drug store or Walmart or Target. It works wonders on the chapped lips, better than chap stick. Both of the derms I’ve seen for Accutane recommended it.
As for the Vitamin E, the derm recommended it, it helps decrease dry skin.

  3. Just an update, I’m on my 6th week of my second round of Accutane. I was on 30mg for 2 weeks, 40 mg for 2 weeks, and now 50 mg for 2 weeks. I will up to 60 mg in about 1 week. Things are great, I think with the buildup of dosages, my side effects have been tolerable. No nasty break out, just dry skin and lips. My hair is a little dry too. Otherwise, things are going really good.

  4. I’ve been on 60mg for about 3 weeks now. I had to quit taking it for 4 days because I got strep and was put on penicillin. After talking to the derm, she said I could take both.
Things are good. No breakout or really bad dry skin. Lips are still pretty dry.
Still taking Vitamin E every day. Also use Cetaphil moisturizer on my face every am and pm. This really helps with the dry skin.
I’ll check back in a few weeks in case anyone is reading any of these.
I have read that some people are having really bad experiences on Accutane. I guess it just depends on the person. This is my second time and the experience is not really that bad.
