To Nomad and others considering supplementation with Vit. A

To Nomad and others considering Vit. A:

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT try to self dose with high levels of Vit. A.

Many vitamins and minerals have toxicity levels; the fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E and K) especially as they are stored in the body.

Vit. A comes in various forms including retinol, retinal, and retinoic acid. Carotenoids such as alpha- and beta- carotene are also converted to Vit. A in the body.

Here’s the difference between them:
1-retinol: needed for reproduction
2-retinal: needed for color and night vision
3-retinoic acid: supports growth and and allows cells to mature and differentiate (especially epithelial {skin} cells).

Accutane is a specialized form of retinoic acid. Retinoic acid does not occur naturally in food etc. and is not available in supplements. Taking Vit. A supplements will not have anywhere near the same positive effects that Accutane has BUT it will have the same negative side effects at toxicities of 100% or more of the RDA. The reason that you’re not supposed to take additional vit. A whilst on Accutane is b/c it magnifies the side effects NOT the benefits.

Just so no-one thinks I’m talking out of my butt here:
I have a BS in Health and Sport Sciences, and I’m certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the American College of Sports Medicine, and I took the aforementioned info from one of my textbooks.
