Accutane Dossage question (help appreciated)

Hey guys, Long time reader, first time poster and all that.

I’ll cut right to the chase. Im a 19 year old male with a weight of around 165 lbs. and earlier today filled out all my paperwork and such for the accutane. Now, I was able to get the perscription through my health clinic’s doctors, actual family practictioners who are certified in it, not actual derms. Well this saves me alot of hassle and cash, I do have a couple of questions.

First off, when I went there it was very busy (hour long weight) so they were all very rushed, and he diddnt really explain all this ipledge stuff well enough, as I dont really know what im supposed to do with it and where exactly on their site I need to register, so I will be calling him about that.

MMy main question is however, he gave me no special instructions as to how to take it. Like starting with half a dosage, then moving up, ect. On my perscription it simply states to take two pills a day with meals, and the pills themselves are 40 mg.

Now, thats 80 mg a day. Im just curious, most blogs I’ve seen on here dont go that far, is this dossage to high for me?

Oh yeah, I suppose its important to tell you all that the reason I am on accutane is for nasty body acne more then the face. Well the face is annoying and acne is a constant presense in that region, I wouldnt call it severe.

I would greatly appreciate any of your help, this board has been helpful to me for years, but I just finally had to post a question :-)

Thanks!

Just take what it says on the box… with meals.
I think the dosgae/strength depends on how severe the condition is and what the person weighs…
i’m on 20mg twice a day… i weigh 55kg (think thats about 110lbs or something like that…) and my condition isnt that bad, well , not compared to a lot of people.

Just be careful and be aware of what your body is telling you (sounds corny, i know!)

maybe you can go see the doc and talk to him soon after you have started the medication… see how its going and sort out any questions / concerns etc.

    good luck!

let us know how u doing

    Hey
I too get acne on my body rather then on my face i’m currentley on 40mg a day. I’m sure they would of followed procedure or you could sue them if all goes wrong right!? lol. Dont worry about it, they would be proffesionals, if you’re really not sure give your doc a ring!

    hey,
the prescribed dosage your doctor gave you is right on target. The recomended dosage is from 0.5 to 1.0 mg per kilogram of body weight. See the link below it has an explanatory chart. I was on accutane a long time ago and it worked great for me. I started with the 20mg dosage for a few weeks but as it didn’t improve the doctor upped my prescription up to 100 mg and that’s when I started to see results.
    Good luck

    Hey PoorCollegeKid.

As the previous poster said, that dosage is fine.

The normal dosage range is .5 to .1mg per 2.2lbs of body weight.

The max dosage is 2mg per 2.2lbs of body weight.

    165 lbs / 2.2 = 75 x 2 mg = 150 mg = Your MAX Dosage Per Day

80mg is just slightly above the "normal" range for you.

I weigh 180lbs and was on 80mg/day for 6 months.

Don’t be concerned if you have a bad "initial break out". After that it will be smooth sailing.

You’re probably going to start feeling the side effects soon. Go ahead and get yourself some eye drops, gentle face lotion, skin lotion, anti-dandruff shampoo, lip balm w/SPF 15, and SPF 15 facial moisturizer.

All of the torture will be worth it once you’re done. I took my last pill in 2004 and have been 99.9% clear ever since.

    Good luck!
